IMD Issues Flash Flood Warning for Pune as Water Discharge from Dams Rises

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a flash flood warning for the city of Pune.

This comes as water levels in the Mutha river have surged, flooding areas along its banks. The monsoon season has seen a strong resurgence in the area, leading to higher dam discharges.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent flash flood warning for Pune due to increased water discharge from local dams prompted by intensified monsoon rains. The Mutha river and areas near the Khadakwasla, Nira Deoghar, Warasgaon, Kasarasai, and Pavana dams are experiencing significant flooding. The IMD has placed Pune and six other districts (Ahmednagar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Nandurbar, Solapur, and Satara) on high alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, which could lead to further flooding. Residents are advised to stay informed through IMD alerts and local news sources, and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety.

In the past 24 hours, heavy rainfall has been recorded across Pune, with Lonavala receiving 161.5 mm, Lavasa 201.0 mm, Shivajinagar 33.6 mm, Pashan 35.1 mm, Chinchwad 54.5 mm, and Koregaon Park 22.5 mm. The irrigation department has begun releasing water from Khadakwasla, Nira Deoghar, Warasgaon, Kasarasai, and Pavana dams due to the ongoing monsoon resurgence. The Mula Mutha river is nearing its danger level at Bund Garden, and areas along the Mutha riverbank are already submerged. As additional rainfall is forecasted, further increases in river discharge are expected, with some vehicles on the Deccan side having been trapped in flash floods on Saturday. Authorities have advised caution, particularly when driving along the ghats and near the riverbed.
