Pimpri to Nigdi Metro Expansion Forces Demolition of PMPML Terminal Platforms at Nigdi

Pimpri-Chinchwad — The expansion of the Pimpri to Nigdi metro line has led to the demolition of two platforms at the Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Terminal in Nigdi. This decision is part of the ongoing work to build a new metro station at Bhakti-Shakti Samuh Shilpa Chowk.

Details of the Expansion

The metro line currently extends 7.5 kilometers from Dapodi to Pimpri. However, the Swargate-Pimpri corridor is being extended to Nigdi’s Bhakti-Shakti Chowk. Major construction work is underway, including the erection of the first pillar in Nigdi.

Demolition of Terminal Platforms

The Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Terminal, managed by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML), will see partial demolition. Out of five platforms at the terminal, two will be dismantled. This decision was approved by PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh in a general meeting.

Reconstruction Plans

The municipal commissioner has assured that the demolished platforms will be rebuilt by MahaMetro once the construction is completed. If MahaMetro does not fulfill this promise, the municipal corporation will handle the reconstruction and seek to recover costs from MahaMetro.

Impact on Traffic and Operations

The demolition has already started affecting traffic flow at the terminal, a key hub for PMPML buses. The construction and installation of temporary sheds for metro pillars are causing congestion and delays.

Ongoing Measures

Safety barriers have been put up, trees obstructing the work area are being cut, and existing lamp posts and traffic signals are being removed to facilitate construction.

Statements from Officials

Executive Engineer Bapusaheb Gaikwad emphasized that the demolition was approved with the condition that the metro authorities will restore the platforms after the new station is finished.
