The increased water release from Khadakwasla dam has led to waterlogging, and there have been four fatalities related to the rain. Pune and its neighboring areas are facing chaos due to intense rainfall, leading to the shutdown of schools and significant disturbances. The IMD has raised a red alert, predicting ongoing heavy showers. District Collector Suhas Diwase has taken the preventive measure of closing schools in multiple regions.

In accordance with the information provided by the District Information Office, the Pune administration has increased the velocity and released water into the Mutha River at 6 a.m. on Thursday, with a flow rate of 40,000 cusecs.Earlier on Thursday, at 4 a.m., water was released at a speed of 27203 cusecs. A cautionary alert has been issued to the residents living along the riverbanks.

Additionally, due to heavy rains in Pune on Wednesday night, water entered the houses and buildings located in Ekta Nagri and Vitthal Nagar areas.

Pune Rains: School Closures Amid Severe Weather

Due to the warning of heavy rain, schools in Khadakwasla, Bhor, Velha, Maval, Mulshi, Haveli talukas, Pune city, and Pimpri Chinchwad have been closed on July 25. Suhas Diwase, the District Collector and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, emphasized the importance of safety, urging residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Heavy rainfall has caused a rise in water discharge from the Khadakwasla dam, resulting in 40,000 cusecs of water being released since dawn. As a consequence, there is a risk of waterlogging in low-lying regions of Pune. A cautionary message from authorities advises citizens to remain vigilant and refrain from non-essential journeys.

“It took me around 80 Minutes to reach from Wakad Square to Hinjewadi Phase 3, which usually is a 40 minute drive,” shared Ankita Sharma , an employee at an MNC in Hinjewadi. Local authorities and police attributed the slow traffic to unattended craters and the metro construction.

Pune Weather: Impact on Peth Areas

In Peth areas, the situation was dire with choked roads and prolonged vehicle queues. Residents like Sunita Pokharna of Shaniwar Peth reported noise pollution from constant honking and inadequate response from traffic police. Rohidas Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), mentioned that teams were deployed to manage the traffic chaos caused by the rains.

Pune Rains: Fatal Incidents and Water Release

Four deaths have been reported in rain-related incidents. Three individuals were electrocuted in Pulachi Wadi, while a landslide in Adarwadi village claimed another life. Collector Diwase stated that heavy rains in catchment areas necessitated the release of over 35,000 cusecs of water from Khadakwasla dam, with potential increases expected.Pune Rains: Emergency Responses Pune City Fire Brigade responded to numerous emergencies, including wall collapses and waterlogged houses.
