In Pune’s Yavat area, 17 workers were hospitalized on Wednesday due to an ammonia gas leak at a local food processing unit.

The facility, situated in Bhandgaon near Yavat, specializes in producing ready-to-eat food that requires refrigeration below 18 degrees Celsius, maintained using ammonia.

According to Narayan Deshmukh, Senior Police Inspector at Yavat Police Station, the leak occurred in one of the unit’s sections while 25 employees, predominantly women, were working.

The gas leak led to immediate health issues for the workers, with one woman, who was closest to the source, being the most severely affected.

Emergency protocols were swiftly enacted: the main ammonia regulator was turned off, and the injured workers were transported to a hospital. Sixteen workers are reported to be in stable condition, while the woman most exposed to the gas remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Her condition is currently stable, and she is considered to be out of immediate danger. The incident highlights the critical need for stringent safety measures and protocols in industrial settings where hazardous materials like ammonia are used.
